Shelby grew up in a life of luxury, the son of an successful executive in the tech industry and his trophy wife. With his father always busy with business and his mother more interested in being a socialite than a mother it's no surprise their son grew to be a rebel. Like many children in this situation, he found that acting out was one of the only ways to get his parent's attention. Both of them quickly grew tired of their son's attitude, shipping him off to boarding school as soon as he was of age. This arrangement was short lived, the boy's bad attitude and destructive behavior resulting in him being kicked out of the school and sent back home within the first year. In the end they concluded that they would have to put up with him in exchange for him not embarrassing their family outside of the home.[break][break]

Initially things went well at school. The people there didn't need anything drastic before they would notice the boy. Instead he did whatever was needed to please and entertain his peers, desperately working to gain their approval by any means. As he grew up things went on in this way, constantly rebelling against authority at home while striving to fit in at school. This satisfied his parents who were willing to put up with him so long as he didn't publicly embarrass them. Lucky for them it took him quite some time to realize this. [break][break]

As he grew up, Shelby became increasingly bored with the way things were. Everything was the same day in day out, and he was done with it. After the first year of middle school he started to cut classes occasionally, sneaking off campus and searching for new thrills. This was how he came to find his new hobby. 'Street art'. With nothing but a can of spray paint, his hover skates and his wits, he got endless thrills vandalizing buildings with his art. And with every work he did he would always sign it with his adopted street name, 'Edge'. Over the years as his talent and boldness grew he found himself doing more daring acts of vandalism, each one more dangerous than the last as he kept searching for the next great thrill. Over the next few years 'Edge' came to be a recognized name in the neighborhood as the infamous vandal plaguing the streets. [break][break]

Initially he managed to keep up with his grades, only sneaking out or skipping class occasionally. But by the time high school came around he found his desire to seek thrills was stronger than his desire to keep his grades up. Skipping class became a regular occurrence and Edge's activity increased as a result. When his grades slipped the faculty had no choice but to hold him back a year to make up for missed classes, something that proved to be a great embarrassment for his parents. It was then Shelby realized concern for their reputation was stronger than their concern for their son. Something they would soon wish they ha done a better job hiding. [break][break]

Over the Summer following his first failed year of high school, Shelby decided it was time for Edge to step into the spotlight. He planned to do a painting far larger and more complicated than his previous works, one he was sure would be his grand finale. Inevitably someone called the police and they arrived before he could finish his work, just as he had intended. He gave the best chase he could, but in the end he was captured and placed under arrest. Upon investigation it was found that the only part of the painting he had completely finished was his signature. This was all the authorities needed to connect him to the previous string of vandalism.[break][break]

When word got out that their son was the one causing so much trouble over the years the Cooper family was mortified. Needless to say they were also extremely angry with their troublesome son. With this final act of rebellion, they knew that his presence would only serve to further damage their reputation. They quickly came to the decision that he had to be sent away, someplace where he wouldn't be able to cause them any more problems. And Kessho Reform Academy seemed like the perfect solution.
